Adventures with L-glutamine Week 3

Finally coming out of the flare up funk from week 2 and into a much better headspace and overall condition in week 3. This week hasn’t been perfect, by any stretch of the word, but I do think things are back on an upward trend. Some of the add-on items which were included as part of week 2 (fiber, bentonite clay, etc.) were dropped to get as close to the original experiment parameters as possible. The main focal point of this week is consistency. I wouldn’t say I felt great every day but overall I am feeling better on a day to day basis. Bathroom habits have been more stable and there were not as many rushed emergencies running from my basement to the upstairs bathroom (although there were a couple). I think a large driver (as many of you could have guessed), still has to do with my diet and stress levels. I can see the biggest differences in my symptoms when I have less stress at work and I am choosing conservative (safer) food options. However, I did pick up some new foods to experiment with this week, so you might see some posts on those goodies in the future over at Food Reviews.

BUT… I had to throw one more wrench in the gears on my overall protocol for the experiment. I had a yearly check up appointment with my Integrative Doctor’s Office and based on some of my current symptoms I was placed back on a daily dose of 3mg Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN). For those of you who aren’t familiar with LDN you can read about it here. I did notice some symptomatic improvements with the addition of LDN like far fewer restroom trips (down from 5 or more to 3 or less), but some of this is also related to the L-glutamine I am sure. However, after LDN was added into my routine it did interrupt my sleep cycle for several nights. I would find myself wide awake at 3 or 5AM and needing to go to the restroom. Luckily these effects somewhat wore off and I stopped my mid-night bathroom trips, but I am still working on the sleep side of things.

Looking back on the last three weeks I wouldn’t say that this supplement has been a “silver bullet” for me, but certainly my quality of life has improved. I am still the most surprised by having days where I make far fewer bathroom trips or my BMs have absolutely no sign of bleeding, or even the fact that I am not as nervous travelling in the car and going out with my family. Overall I have been satisfied with the results of the experiment thus far and I will more than likely be purchasing the same product again to see if I can get even more improvement, past the 4 weeks I had planned. Until next week…
